School of Architecture and Planning

Architecture students touring Labatt Brew House for their fieldwork.

The School of Architecture and Planning is a rich, multidisciplinary environment of creative, talented, and intelligent people. Collectively, we discuss provocative ideas, do meaningful work, and advance timely projects that interface with the complex social and environmental issues of the 21st century.

Student presentation for the project Urban Design Connecting Buffalo happened in December 2022 in Hayes Hall

We offer a world-class education that enables our students to think critically, design creatively, problem solve collaboratively, and communicate visually. For example, in one of our first-year studios, “Architectural Alchemy,” students learn how—in the hands of a designer—materials can reflect ideas, tell stories, and catalyze emotions by engaging in collaborative learning, participating in weekly design crits, and exploring materials and tectonic assembly logics. Or from one of our capstone studios, “Building Bridges,” where students explore redevelopment options for the Cobblestone District, preparing them to see the full implications of what planning can do for the built environment. Or from our students who choose to study abroad, where global summer studios led by our faculty are filled with experiences that engage buildings, landscape, and cities — all while preparing them for careers in an increasingly global field.

Here in the School, we shape students to be model citizens, future leaders, and agents of change. By supporting our programs this Giving Day, your generosity will help us work together to educate and inspire the next generation of leading architects and planners.
